Understanding America: College Sports
For some reason there is a lot of emphasis in the USA for you to be big on sports, which is fine sports is a big deal everywhere, professional men and woman at the top of their sports (excluding the MLS, I believe the champions of the MLS would struggle in the Championship) and they are paid a handsome amount of money as way of gratitude for all they put their bodies through, well the men do at least, and all this I understand what truly baffles me though and I can’t get my head around is the fact that there seems to be a fascination in College sports to the degree in which you would think that they are pros going at the game.
The fact of the matter is they aren’t pros, not at all they are just a bunch of students who in their free time normally on the weekend have millions glued to their seats in awww of their skill as they have the smart kid who is college on an academic scholarship do all the school work for them (I am making an assumption of course). So why is there all this hype surrounding children fresh out of senior prom?
Well for one I have been made to understand that not all American States or rather not all major cities have a professional sports team in and around so they rely on their college team to be that team for instance with American Football where there are like 400000000 College teams cause I swear to you I learn a new team every week, and this helps in cities that are unfortunate enough not to have a team even though it gets confusing for instance Ney York has like 3 teams in the NFL but no college team in American Football but at the same time none of the teams in the NFL actually play in Ney York City as the Bills are from Buffalo (I don’t know nor care where that is) and the Jets and Giants play in New Jersey which I thought was just another part of Ney York like Manhattan or Brooklyn but apparently it’s not (it might be and I just don’t know since i haven’t bothered doing any research about it at all) but people still cheer for the teams so it is fine I guess.
A lot of fault should probably go to the weird style of having your leagues in a franchise mode having it be impossible for the fans to know the bitter feeling that is relegation instead each team can be trash for infinity and beyond (I am an Arizona Cayotes fan so I know) and never have to face fear of being punished for it, all this while having children playing around in these sports without any rhythm or reason for it, honestly just send them to the Leagues right out of Highschool, football players start young, hell Arsenal played a boy who was 15 this season, he isn’t old enough sit behind the wheel of vehicle yet he is more than capable of performing in front of millions, why not just let the kids be students and then they can become athletes not this nonsense of clinging on to a college team because they don’t have their own, and do away with franchising, it’s stupid.
But that all aside, it would seem that people are made really happy by all this and I doubt they would even know the first step to have it done like in Europe and the world so power to them I guess.
